It is more than one month that, in Sunday
gospels, we witness controversies between Jesus and the religious leaders of
the Jews. Up to now, Jesus has criticized them indirectly, especially through
parables; now instead he starts to attack them frontally, reproaching them with
hypocrisy. Chapter 23 of Matthew’s gospel is an indictment of the scribes and the
Pharisees. A substantial portion of it consists in a series of seven “woes”
against them: “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites…” for this and
that reason.

«Quis ascendet in montem Domini?»
The Psalmist wonders, “Who can
ascend the mountain of the Lord? (Quis ascendet in montem Domini?) or who may stand in his holy place?” And he
answers his own question this way, “One whose hands are sinless, whose heart is
clean, who desires not what is vain.” Which means, in order for us to stay with
the Lord, we have to be clean of heart. Purity of heart is a key element in
today’s liturgy: we find it in all readings. This means that holiness and
purity of heart coincide; holiness consists in purity of heart.

Fase B?

«Mandatum magnum»
The controversies between Jesus and the
Pharisees continue. This time a scholar of the law, that is, a scribe puts
Jesus to the test, asking him about a question rather common among rabbis at
that time: “Which commandment in the law is the greatest?”—literally, “Which
is the great commandment (mandatum magnum) in the law?” Why did rabbis discuss this issue?
Because they enumerated a good 613 precepts in the Bible. We have had a sample
of these precepts in the first reading. So, it was understandable for rabbis to
discover which was the greatest commandment. Evidently, they also had problems with
catechesis: how to teach people so many commandments? It was absolutely
necessary to focus on the essentials. It is true that, among the more than six
hundred precepts, there are the ten commandments given by God to Moses; but
they are still ten. Is it not possible to find one commandment which can
summarize the other ones and on which all others depend?

Today’s gospel is about politics! To understand
it, it can be useful to say something about the political situation of
Palestine in Jesus’ time. It was not an independent State, but just a province
of the Roman Empire. It was divided into different regions; some of them under a
puppet king (or “tetrarch”), like Galilee, ruled by Herod Antipas, and Ituraea,
under his brother Philip; others, like Judea and Samaria, directly depending on
Rome and ruled by a governor (at that time, Pontius Pilate). The Jews had
different positions on Roman rule; there were different parties; two of them
are mentioned in today’s gospel. The Herodians, so called because
supporters of king Herod Antipas, were in favor of the Romans. The Zealots,
instead, opposed the Romans and sought to overthrow their authority even
resorting to terrorist attacks. Then there were the Pharisees, who also were
against the Romans, but without employing violence.

“Sensus fidelium” e scollamento ecclesiale

Maria.

We have just finished reading the last of the
three parables told by Jesus in the temple of Jerusalem against the religious
leaders of the people—chief priests, elders and Pharisees. This time Jesus does
not speak of a vineyard, but of a wedding feast. Even in this case, it is not a
new image; it was already used in the old testament to portray final salvation.
We have heard, in the first reading, the prophet Isaiah speaking of a banquet
prepared by God for all peoples. Now Jesus takes up the same metaphor as a
symbol of the kingdom of heaven.

17:00 (12:30 UTC; 14:30 Roma; 08:30 New York): SANTO ROSARIO
17:30 (13:00 UTC; 15:00 Roma; 09:00 New York): SANTA MESSA

«Hic factus est in caput anguli»
Jesus is still in the temple, arguing with the
chief priests and the elders of the people. He tells the second of the three
polemical parables against them. We heard the first one (the Two Sons) last week;
we will read the third one (the Wedding Feast) on next Sunday.

Censure liturgiche
banchetto nuziale”) ci verrà proposta domenica prossima.

Quando viene buono il latino
Nel mio post del 27 aprile 2016, a proposito
dell’esortazione apostolica Evangelii gaudium, scrivevo:

«Paenitentia motus abiit»
Jesus is in Jerusalem by now. He has made his
triumphal entry into the Holy City and has begun to teach in the temple. And there
immediately start disputes between him and the religious leaders—in this case
the chief priests and the elders of the people. Among the controversies, Jesus
tells three polemical parables. We have read today the first of them; we will
read the other two on the following Sundays.

We start today the reading of the fifth and
last book of Matthew’s gospel, which is about the approaching advent of the
kingdom of heaven. The events narrated in this part take place in Judea and in
Jerusalem, just before Jesus’ passion. The parable of the workers in the
vineyard is peculiar to Matthew; we do not find it in the other gospels. Since
this evangelist writes his gospel for the Jews who had become Christian, his
concern is to explain them how come God, who had chosen Israel as his people,
now is turning to the pagans.

Riforme e controriforme
domenica 17 settembre 2017
«De cordibus vestris»
We are still reading the discourse on the
Church. If you remember, last Sunday Jesus gave his disciples some instructions
about fraternal correction; today he speaks of forgiveness. Both “admonish
sinners” and “forgive offenses” are works of spiritual mercy. It means that the
Church is a “house of mercy”—the place where Christians, recognizing themselves
as sinners, correct each other and forgive each other.

circa il can.

«Corripe eum»
It is already several weeks that we are reading
the fourth part of Matthew’s gospel, which is about the Church as first-fruits
of the kingdom of heaven. Up to now we have read passages from its narrative
section: the miracle of the loaves; Jesus walking on the water; the meeting
with the Canaanite woman; Peter’s profession of faith and his pre-eminence; the
first prediction of the passion. As usual, after the narrative section, we find
a discourse—in this case, the “discourse on the Church.”
giovedì 7 settembre 2017
Irreversibile?
Magari, l’appellarsi all’«autorità

«Vade post me!»
The gospel selection we have just heard is the
continuation of last Sunday’s passage. We are still at Caesarea Philippi, where
Simon had recognized Jesus as the Messiah—“You are the Christ, the Son of the
living God”—and Jesus had conferred on Simon the primacy over the Church—“You
are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my Church.”

Corifeo, maggiordomo e clavigero
Vorrei riprendere e approfondire alcuni punti da me solo accennati — come è
Senza voler in alcun modo mettere in

Servus servorum Dei
Peter the coryphaeus (ὁ κορυφαῖος) and Andrew the “first-called” (ὁ πρωτόκλητος)
Peter’s confession is an episode we find in all
the gospels, not only in the synoptics, but even in John, although in a
different way. But Matthew’s account of the event is distinguished from the others.
Mark, Luke and John confine themselves to report Peter’s confession: “You are
the Christ.” Matthew, instead, tells us how Jesus reacted to this profession of
faith: he conferred on Peter a primacy over the other apostles and the whole
Church. If we do not find this narrative in the other gospels, it does not mean
that Matthew invented it; all the evangelists confirm, some way or other, the
change of Simon’s name into Cephas or Peter and his pre-eminence among the
disciples. Today’s liturgy seems to emphasize the conferment of the primacy on
Peter rather than his profession of faith. So, we will dwell on this aspect,
even because it can be useful to fix some points.

Osservatore o pastore?
Nel mio post successivo all’elezione del Card. Jorge Mario Bergoglio al
supremo pontificato (17 marzo 2013)
pronunciate poco dopo l’elezione.
eccessiva importanza.

«Et catelli edunt de micis»
Judaism has always been and still is an ethnic
religion, that is, the religion of a specific people. However, little by little
the idea began to spread that all peoples were called to salvation through
Israel. We have an example of this new mindset in the first reading. It is a
selection from the third part of the book of the prophet Isaiah. Scholars say
that the oracles collected here date back to the sixth century before Christ,
that is, after the return of the Jews from exile. “I will bring [foreigners] to
my holy mountain … my house shall be called a house of prayer for all peoples.”

Signum certae spei et solatii
The Church has always seen in
the woman of Revelation, adorned with the sun, the moon and the stars, the
Blessed Virgin Mary. That is why many pictures of Mary Immaculate represent her
with the moon under her feet and with her head surrounded by a crown of twelve
stars. And that is why the liturgy of the Assumption has chosen this passage
from the last book of the Bible as the first reading.

«Vere Filius Dei es!»
Two weeks ago, we finished reading the Sermon
of Jesus in parables. Last Sunday we should have started the narrative section
of the fourth part of Matthew’s gospel, which is about the Church considered as
the first-fruits of the kingdom of heaven; but we celebrated the
transfiguration of the Lord. If we had celebrated the Sunday liturgy, we would
have read the account of the miracle of the loaves. Today we read the
continuation of that story. Jesus dismisses the crowds and strangely orders his
disciples to precede him to the other side of the Sea of Galilee. Why? Jesus
needed to stay alone for a while. Evidently, the experience of that day had
been particularly stressful for him. Besides the teaching and the feeding of the
five thousand, we know from the gospel of John that people wanted to make him
king. I think that something like that would not be easy to manage for anybody.
It must have taken a lot of time for Jesus to convince the crowds to leave him
alone and go home. So, there was need of a moment of solitude, silence and
prayer to metabolize that experience.

Concilio e storia

Today is the 6th of August, the day on
which the Church remembers the transfiguration of Jesus. Since it is a feast of
the Lord, according to the liturgical norms, it is more important than a Sunday
in Ordinary Time. So, today, instead of celebrating the usual Sunday liturgy,
we celebrate the liturgy of the transfiguration of the Lord.

Come

Last Sunday
we started reading the third discourse of Jesus in Matthew’s gospel—the “Sermon
in parables.” We read the first of seven parables—the parable of the sower—with
its explanation. Today we have read other three parables—the weeds, the mustard
seed and the yeast. What they have in common is growth: the wheat grows along
with the weeds; the mustard seed grows and becomes a big plant; the yeast makes
dough rise. Which means that the kingdom of heaven is not something static, but
dynamic: it grows from small beginnings to a great extension.

“Fondamentalismo evangelicale e integralismo cattolico. Un sorprendente
ecumenismo”.

We start
today the reading of the third discourse of Jesus in Matthew’s gospel. It is

Last Sunday we finished the
reading of the second part of Matthew’s gospel. Today we start the third part,
whose subject is “the Mystery of the Kingdom of Heaven.” This part also is
subdivided into two sections—a narrative one and a discourse. Next Sunday we
will begin the reading of the third discourse of Jesus—the so-called “Sermon of
Parables.” The only passage from the narrative section that we read is the one we
have just heard: few verses—six altogether—but very important. They are exactly
about the mystery of the Kingdom of Heaven.

The Renewal of Christian Fervor
Anthony Mary Zaccaria is not a
famous Saint. Many people, even good Catholics, do not even know of his
existence. Many priests and religious, since his liturgical celebration is
inserted in the Roman Calendar, just know that he was the founder of a
religious order—which one, they do not know, as the Barnabites are so few and
little spread in the world. Even at school or in the ecclesiastical faculties,
studying the Lutheran Reformation and the Catholic Counter-Reformation, when
history handbooks have to deal with the foundation of new religious orders (the
so-called “clerics regular”), they usually mention the first of these
founders—Saint Cajetan—and the most famous of them—Saint Ignatius of
Loyola—neglecting all others.

«Qui recipit vos, me recipit»
One month ago, we celebrated the
solemnity of Pentecost, with which Eastertide ends. Soon afterwards we resumed
the so-called Ordinary Time, started after the Epiphany and interrupted with
the beginning of Lent; but these last Sundays were replaced by some other
important liturgical celebrations (Trinity Sunday; Corpus Christi; the Most
Sacred Heart of Jesus). So, today is the first actual Sunday of the Ordinary
Time after Pentecost.

Today
is Pentecost Sunday, the conclusion of Easter Time and the fulfillment of the
